THESE are trying times for Macquarie Bank. It's copping a fair share of the blame for losing the $11 billion Qantas takeover battle. Its $8 billion cash or cash and shares bid for Alinta has been snubbed by Alinta, the company it once intimately advised, in favour of a scrip-heavy alternative from the Macquarie clone, Babcock & Brown. And it's about to endure its annual lambasting for paying its top executives too much.
